Greifswald

Under northern skies

Greifswald from above

Greifswald is located directly at the Baltic sea, in the north-east corner of Germany. Formerly a small town with a long history in the Hanseatic League and the Duchy of Pomerania, known through the works of the romantic painter Caspar David Friedrich, Greifswald has transformed into one of the most vivid and prosperous among the smaller German cities during the last twenty years. Today Greifswald is not only home to the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt University, one of the oldest German universities with over 550 years of tradition, but also to modern research facilities such as the Wendelstein 7-X fusion reactor at the Max-Planck-Institute of Plasma Physics. Being close to the islands of Rügen and Usedom, which form one of the most popular of Germany's holiday regions, Greifswald is attractive for short-term visitors and long-time residents alike. After all the town's motto could well be: To enjoy life and work where others spend their vacation.
